Justin’s Chocolate Hazelnut Butter

Remember Nutella?  Are you a vegan who has been longing for that delicious, hazelnutty, chocolate spread?

Well, your longing is over!  There is a new nut butter on the market, and that is Justin’s Chocolate Hazelnut Butter.  And it is spectacular.  Dare I say…I like this stuff even better than Nutella?

I read about this in VegNews magazine but never tried it because the only place I could find it was Amazon, and it was only sold in a pack of 3 jars.  Expensive, and a risk when you don’t even know if you’ll like it.  But now my local PCC Natural Markets carries it!  I passed it over for the last couple of months because it is pretty expensive, but this week I decided to go for it.  I am so glad I did!  I also noticed that  they sell single-serve pouches of this in their deli section, so if you don’t want to shell out $8 for the whole jar, you can still give it a try.

First off, though – don’t expect it to be Nutella.  It’s not.  It isn’t as sweet, and it doesn’t have that super-smooth, frosting-like texture.  It’s more like a nut butter.  If you’ve ever had Adam’s natural peanut butter, the texture is similar – perhaps a tad bit smoother, but there is still some grainy texture.   And there is a lot less sugar.  But to my palate, there is just enough sugar to make it appealing…and the fact that there are only 7 grams of sugar per serving (as opposed to 20 grams in Nutella), means that this is suitable for breakfast or a snack, rather than an indulgent dessert.  And that’s good news!

So…all this in mind, I really didn’t expect it to be much like Nutella when I first tasted it.  But you know what?  It was astonishingly similar!  Similar enough to satisfy even the strongest Nutella craving.   And I actually like the grainier, salty-sweet taste of this one.  Best of all, I love that this isn’t a “vegan nutella substitute” or anything like that.  There is no substitute feel here.  It’s just a straight-up nut butter, with a little salt, sugar, and cocoa powder added to it.

I’ve been on this kick where I put a glob of peanut butter on my oatmeal.  This morning, I put Justin’s Hazelnut butter on it!  I felt so decadent, but it was sweet enough that I didn’t need any maple syrup like I usually use when I have oats and peanut butter.  So, I really don’t think it was any less healthy than my usual breakfast.  I thought about snapping a photo, but I was too eager to dig in!  Next time.

For those who are wondering, here is the ingredients list:  dry roasted hazelnuts, organic evaporated cane sugar, organic cocoa, organic cocoa butter, organic palm fruit oil, natural vanilla, sea salt.

  1. I actually find it too salty. 65 g of salt in two tablespoons yikes!!! This is why the majority of people in America have high blood pressure. Try Rawtella instead. No Salt, No sugar.

    1. I like the salty-sweet, and 65 mg per 2 Tbsp isn’t that much IMO, but to each their own! I just saw the Rawtella in VegNews magazine, I’d love to try it!
